I look at 'winging it' as being too lazy to read the book or play by the rules. and i believe that is actually the stated way (aside from the optional double damage) that the rules flowed in the 2e players handbook. the only thing close to a house rule we ever used was 20 always hit (and did double damage) and 1 always missed. I'm serious though, i'm not looking back pretending. Seriously, the best way to give 5e a more fully 1e feel is to hop into a time machine and travel 30 years into the future so that you can listen to today's players whine about 8e or 9e not being up to the standards of 5e. Really? Why wing it? You realize that 'winging it' is the freaking hallmark of the TSR era, right? If winging it is a waste of time then don't play 1e or 2e either.
